Researchers at the University of British Columbia are in the beginning stages of a study with NeonMind, a psychedelic drug development company, that may link magic mushrooms with weight loss.
The goal of the study is to find out if using psilocybin mushrooms as a way to confront a person’s reason for overeating can change their view of food, thus aiding in weight loss.
Psilocybin is being studied as a treatment for many other mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction, and now it’s being studied as a tool in treating eating disorders.
Eating disorders are not particularly responsive to traditional medicines, this could be a huge breakthrough, not only to curb eating habits but also in treating eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, which has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric illness.
